Dear Parents and Guardians:

I have received numerous emails and phone calls regarding concerns about recess. I hope this letter will provide clarification.

Our Elementary students have 20 minutes of recess scheduled during their lunch periods. It has been brought to our attention that students may not be receiving the full 20 minutes of recess for various reasons. For the remainder of the year, teachers may continue to take their classes out for an additional 20-minutes of recess.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) recently enacted new regulations regarding the number of annual instructional hours that are required for students K-12, which go into effect for the 2018-19 school year. These regulations are very clear that recess, lunch, and passing times are not considered instructional time and as a result cannot be counted into the number of mandated hours.

In the near future we will be meeting with our Elementary Building Level Team and staff to review various options regarding recess for the 2018-2019 school year.

We will be providing you with additional information as it develops.

Sincerely,
Lisa A. Wiles
Superintendent
